Youngstown has been the center of debate for many years: the area is a frequent campaign stop for presidential nominees, a growing metropolis of innovation and energy-conscious initiatives, a place to enjoy the best nature this side of the Mississippi, and so much more. We asked residents why they love living in the Youngstown area, the best things to do here, and why they continue to call it home.
1. Mill Creek Metroparks
When you think of the glaciers that covered the earth millions of years ago, it’s hard to imagine much else than a plain of ice. That plain, however, made its way across the Mahoning Valley and carved some of the most beautiful nature preserves in the United States here in Youngstown, OH. From Lanterman’s Mill to Lily Pond, people living in Youngstown can take advantage of the scenery and free activities all year long, including fishing, Fellows Riverside Gardens and the many hiking trails that weave in and out of the woods.
2. Birthplace of Innovation
We bet you didn’t know that in Downtown Youngstown, you’ll find more than the remnants of a steel town. You’ll find a small, unsuspecting building with large picture windows that holds something miraculous. America Makes is an industry leading–and first of its kind–3D modeling and additive manufacturing facility. Since 2012, they have been pushing the boundaries of the manufacturing, healthcare and technology fields. Check out their website for upcoming tours and classes.
3. White House Fruit Farm
Hallmark® movies have nothing on the experiences the people of the Mahoning Valley have at White House Fruit Farm, one of the best things to do in Youngstown. Open all year round, the family-owned and operated farm provides not only fresh foods, apple cider and authentic farm experiences, but award-winning blueberry donuts that are craved by locals and celebrities alike.
4. Youngstown State University
While Ohio State may have the privilege of holding football championships with a famous coach, Youngstown State University has the privilege of calling him their President. Jim Tressel, every football fans’ favorite Ohioan, has been serving as the President of the University since 2014. YSU has over 170 undergraduate degrees, this research university has something for everyone
5. The Canfield Fair
Funnel cakes, giant pumpkins, entertainment and more is what you can expect to find at the largest county fair in Ohio–third largest in the United States. Each year thousands flock from all over the United States to experience food, fun and family reunions because you never know who you’ll run into at the Canfield Fair.
6. The Youngstown Business Incubator
